Each year, more First Responders die by suicide than other causes of line of duty death. At First H.E.L.P., we work to #SMASHtheSTIGMA surrounding mental health and wellness for First Responders. Proceeds of this walk will fund care packages for families and departments after a suicide, grief camps, training and other costs associated with awareness and prevention.
Since 2019 the #IWillListen Ruck Challenge has recognized First Responders lost to suicide. Each year from November 11th to December 30th, our Chief Learning Officer, Joe Willis walks one mile for each First Responder lost to suicide and recognizes them by walking for one state per day. 1 mile per responder, 1 day state per day. Some days, are zero miles because we have no reports of suicides from that state. Others are as high as 15 or more.
On December 31st, Joe takes on a challenge hike (Mission Trails 5 Peak Challenge for instance) to cover the miles for those reported between November 11th and December 30th. In 2022, the #IWillListen Challenge Ruck will take Joe on 45-mile walk from North San Diego County to the scenic Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach. We would like you to join us for a three mile loop around Lake Poway. If you are unable to join us in San Diego for the walk please consider making a donation to support the mission and #SMASHtheSTIGMA.
